“Behind My Mask” by Keila Small

September 7, 2024

artist Keila Small

My work is a constant search for the best way to interpret the ideas that I have about myself as a woman. Through my new series,” Through my
Eyes”, I do not limit myself to one style or concept simply because interpretation and ideas change. I believe in creativity, imagination and self-expression. I portray my subjects in surroundings that are relevant to my life and/or in a manner that best captives my emotions at the time. I think of my work as a celebration and affirmation of my life. Each portrait is an adventure and curiosity of the human figure. I want to infuse my portraits with a sense of realism, so each painting appears relaxed and familiar. Art is more about communicating what I am feeling than what I am seeing. My goal is to capture women’s beauty by allowing them to be themselves. HOPE YOU ENJOY THE SHOW!

BIO
I currently live and work in sunny Florida. I was raised in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. When I was younger, I was encouraged to pursue education and career interests that would lead to fulfilling my family’s goals for me. I always did artwork, often hiding my devotion to the craft I loved.
After graduating high school in Haiti, I went on to North Carolina A&T State University obtaining a BS in Applied Mathematics. While I studied hard and succeeded in these endeavors’ art was always in my heart and on my mind. Today, if I am asked what I do or even who I am, I am proud to answer…I am an artist.
