Carrollwood Cultural Center and show director Paul Berg will hold auditions for Sunday in the Park with George. Inspired by “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by George Seurat, this musical by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim, with orchestrations by Michael Starobin, brings Seurat’s painting to life on stage.  Sunday in the Park with George was produced initially on Broadway by The Shubert Organization and Emanuel Azenberg by arrangement with Playwrights Horizon, Inc. New York City, which produced the original production of Sunday in The Park With George in 1983.

Please be prepared to sing 16 bars from a musical. You may use a Sondheim song from any of his other musicals. An accompanist will be provided, but you are also welcome to sing with a track you bring. You may also be asked to sing songs from the production during the rehearsal process. Video submissions are also welcome. Please send videos to [email protected].

IMPORTANT PRODUCTION DATES

Auditions: November 12 and 13, at 6-8 pm.

Possible Callbacks: November 14

Rehearsals Begin: Rehearsals will begin in January. Rehearsals will run Monday through Thursday, 7 pm – 9 pm. Rehearsal times
during tech week will be later.

Tech Week: TBA

Performance Dates: March 15, 16, 22, and 23, at 8 pm / March 17 and 24 at 2 pm

CASTING BREAKDOWN

Characters will be doubling during Act 2.

George Seurat / Young George (Seurat’s Descendant)

Gender: Male | Age: 25 to 40 | Vocal range top: Ab4 | Vocal range bottom: G#2

In Act I, George is a rather cold artist obsessed with his work at the cost of his personal life. Constantly troubled and borderline obsessive. In Act II, George’s burnt-out descendant and inventor-sculpture searching for his purpose. In the end, he uses his connection to the past to find the meaning in a blank canvas.

Dot / Marie

Gender: Female | Age: 20 to 40 | Vocal range top: D5 | Vocal range bottom: E3

Dot is George’s headstrong mistress and occasional model. She is so discontent with their relationship that she eventually leaves him. Marie is George’s elderly wheelchair-bound grandmother who helps him connect to his artistry through her grammar book notes.

Old Lady/Blair Daniels

Gender: Female | Age: 60 to 80 | Vocal range top: Eb5 | Vocal range bottom: F#3

George’s mother, a cranky and rather demanding fixture in the park. She can find solace in nostalgia and inspires George to find order in his art.

Nurse/Harriet Pawling

Gender: Female | Age: 40 to 60 | Vocal range top: F4 | Vocal range bottom: G3

The Old Lady’s attendant. She is calming and assertive.

Jules/Bob Greenberg

Gender: Male | Age: 25 to 45 | Vocal range top: F4 | Vocal range bottom: G2

A rival artist. Callous, critical, and ultimately shallow. He forces Frieda to engage in extramarital affairs.

Yvonne/Naomi Eisen

Gender: Female | Age: 25 to 35 | Vocal range top: Eb5 | Vocal range bottom: E3

Jules’s pampered wife. She is as snippy and snooty as her husband.

Boatman/Charles Redmond

Gender: Male | Age: 35 to 60 | Vocal range top: Eb4 | Vocal range bottom: Eb2

A surly blue-collared laborer, simple-minded and slovenly.

Celeste #1 / Waitress

Gender: Female | Age: 18 to 30 | Vocal range top: G5 | Vocal range bottom: B3

A young shop girl, gossipy and flirtatious. Her friendship with the other Celeste is strained when they fight over the Soldier and his companion.

Celeste #2 / Elaine

Gender: Female | Age: 18 to 30 | Vocal range top: G5 | Vocal range bottom: A3

Another young shop girl, gossipy and flirtatious. Her friendship with the other Celeste is strained when they fight over the Soldier and his companion.

Louise/Boy

Gender: Female | Age: 8 to 12 | Vocal range top: Eb5 | Vocal range bottom: G3

Jules and Yvonne’s spoiled little girl. She faces neglect and abuse from her parents despite being honest.

Franz/Dennis

Gender: Male | Age: 30 to 50 | Vocal range top: G4 | Vocal range bottom: B2

Jules’s German coachman and Freida’s husband. Disgruntled with his job. Has a bit of a temper and secretly yearns for the Nurse.

Frieda/Betty

Gender: Female | Age: 35 to 55 | Vocal range top: F5 | Vocal range bottom: G3

Jules and Yvonne’s cook and Franz’s wife. She’s caring and positive as a surrogate nanny to Louise. Forced by Jules into an affair.

Soldier/Alex

Gender: Male | Age: 20 to 35 | Vocal range top: F4 | Vocal range bottom: A2

A French military man, polite and gentlemanly. Close with his companion, though he yearns for a separation.

Louis/Billy Webster/Man

Gender: Male | Age: 35 to 55 | Vocal range top: A4 | Vocal range bottom: B2

A baker who Dot starts seeing to make George jealous. Kind, friendly, and very popular, but a bit dull.
