MAS Theatre is looking for a diverse, dynamic and energetic cast of performers to bring this HOT production to life. MAS Theatre will be going Speakeasy and telling this story with a live orchestra under the direction of Jim Burge. All actors must be strong singers as well as actors and mover/dancers.  WE ARE ACTIVELY SEEKING ALL ETHNICITIES FOR ALL ROLES. This is the coveted Gilbert and Sullivan masterpiece “The Mikado” with an adapted jazz score and a 1940s Japanese Speakeasy setting.

Actors should prepare an up-tempo and a ballad with at least one selection being a jazz song, not to exceed three minutes total. Please bring sheet music in the correct key. Background tracks are acceptable.

Video submissions are accepted; however, in-person auditions are highly recommended.

The ages of these characters are adaptable within reason.

Actors of all ages, races, and ethnicities are encouraged to audition.

Ko-Ko: Baritone. Stage age 25-35. Lord High Executioner, given his title the night before he was to be put to death for flirting. He has never killed anything in his life. An all-around “nice guy”. Needs to have impeccable comedic timing and a strong mastery of the stage. Vocal range top: B5, bottom: B3

Nanki-Poo: Tenor. Stage age 20-30. The son of the Mikado. A fresh-faced “rock crooner.” Runs away from his father and the high court and pretends to be a wandering minstrel who plays the trumpet with lots of energy but little finesse. Vocal range top: B5, bottom: C4

Yum-Yum: Soprano. Stage age 18-25. The ward of Titipu’s Lord High Executioner and engaged to marry him. She loves Nanki-Poo. Honest and narcissistic. Needs comedic timing and a lovely soprano voice. Vocal range top: G5, bottom: A3

Katisha: Contralto. Stage age 25+. Nanki-Poo’s spurned and subsequently angry suitor. Femme fatale. Threatens to tell everyone of Nanki-Poo’s real identity to ruin his engagement to Yum-Yum. Vocal range top: D5, bottom: F3

Poo-Bah: Bass. Stage age 25+. Lord High “everything else.” Took over all the offices of State when everyone else quit. Clever, money-hungry and selfish. Ko-Ko’s right-hand man. Vocal range top: F5, bottom: A3

Pitti-Sing: Mezzo-Soprano. Stage age 25-30. Yum-Yum’s sister. Very matter-of-fact. Protective of her sisters, and isn’t afraid to stand up to Katisha. Needs to be an extremely strong vocalist with a very wide vocal range. Vocal range top: A5, bottom: E3

Pish-Tush: Tenor. Stage age 20+. The “coolest” Gentleman of Japan. Thinks himself overly important when doing the Mikado’s bidding. High-strung and rash. Vocal range top: B5, bottom: A3

Peep-Bo: Alto. Stage age 18-25. Yum-Yum’s Sister. Cynical and sarcastic. Has the most attitude of all three sisters. Needs to be very comfortable singing difficult harmonies on her own. Vocal range top: F5, bottom: B3

The Mikado: Baritone. Stage age 35+. The big “cat” of Japan. An ardent stickler for the law, and a ruler who finds humor in every situation even when it is unjust or absurd. Also plays in the ensemble in Act 1. Loves a good show and is quite a showman himself. Vocal range top: A5, bottom: C4

The Gentlemen: 3 Gentlemen of Japan. Wide vocal range. Stage age 20-50. Strong singers and adept dancers. Jazzy and fun.

The Ladies: 3 Ladies of Japan. Wide vocal range. Stage age 20-50. Strong singers and dancers. Sassy and lively.
