Artist’s Statement

I was born in Manhattan, NY on September 20, 1940.  My family moved to Fall River, Massachusetts, when I was five years old.  I became interested in art at an early age growing up in New England.  I have been drawing and sketching since I began elementary school.

In the 1980s, I became fascinated with painting oils on canvas.  I started classes at Matt Barros studio in Providence, Rhode Island, with the encouragement of my uncle, artist Dan Lima.

After thirty years with the New England Telephone Company, my wife Vicki and I retired and moved to the Tampa Bay area.  We have three grown children.

My mother’s people came to this country at the turn of the last century from Cape Verde Islands, a former Portuguese colony off the coast of Africa.  I was inspired throughout my life by pictures and stories of the islands.  This inspiration is reflected in my art and creations.

I am always excited and intrigued by learning new techniques, methods, and mediums.  I interpret my dreams and stories through my paintings and sculptures.
