A fun filled arts and craft class for pre-schoolers. This class is designed for the ability of each individual child to feel successful in their accomplishments. It is about the process of the project and not just the outcome. We will have a different learning theme each week and the projects will correlate with the theme. Each child will progress at his or her own learning level. We will use a wide spectrum of art materials, from paints to markers, to play dough. Each class your child will bring home a variety of fun projects that they created. This class will combine a fun learning experience with arts and crafts.

Oil paints are wonderful but they do require solvents that aren’t for everyone.  This fun class lets you try two alternatives: water soluble oils and Golden Open Acrylics.  You’ll learn a step-by-step approach to completing a painting, how to mix colors, and how to get the most out of your reference photos. For beginning and intermediate painters.  Bring reference photos.

*Materials Fee: Students have the option of paying the instructor $5 per week for paints.

Required Supplies:

Paints: Holbein water-soluble oils or Golden Open acrylics.  Suggested palette: cadmium lemon, cadmium yellow, alizarin crimson, cadmium red, cerulean blue hue, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, black, & titanium white. Do you love painting but feel that your work is missing something?  Strong composition and effective use of color are tools that will help any painter bring their work to the next level.  This hands-on class consists of practical lessons in color mixing and combinations, as well as time-tested approaches for powerful compositions. Students work on individual projects from photos using oil paints or acrylics.  Some painting experience recommended.

Required Supplies:
Paints: oil paints or acrylics.  Suggested palette:  cadmium yellow, alizarin crimson, cadmium red, cerulean blue hue, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, black, & titanium white.

An artist's perception of the Holocaust including art lessons based on the Holocaust.  We will travel through the Holocaust looking at it from an artist's perspective and more.  This class is based on A Teacher's Guide to the Holocaust, which Ms. Hubbard-Slicer worked on while studying her doctorate at USF. Ms. Hubbard-Slicer was also responsible for the art lessons on the CD, which can be found at http://fcit.usf.edu/holocaust/arts/arts.htm. This section explores art made by inmates of the ghettos and camps, art that was classified as "degenerate" by the Nazis, art and architecture approved by the Third Reich, and art which has been created in response to the Holocaust.

Art projects will be part of this class.

The participants will master the use of sponges, shells, and other materials’ techniques to create awesome 3-dimensional projects.

This class works well for beginners and more advanced painters. Using the theories and methods that were invented by the French Impressionist painters, a canvas is “built” much like a house. There are six stages in the process that is a time-honored way of making a painting using values to guide the work along. Color, of course, is stressed but not given as a recipe, and the student will find that learning these steps will allow painting any subject matter a joy rather than a struggle. In this class, we will work from a still life, provided by the student. The first class will be a lecture demonstration by the instructor where the method and materials that are used will be demonstrated and discussed.

Students will learn to master the basic brushstrokes of Oriental Brush Painting (Sumi-e) and create beautiful brush paintings. This is a meditative art therapy class that will awaken the senses to a new passion for painting. Oriental music will be played throughout the course to enhance tranquility. The painting technique is easy to learn because there are only three brushstrokes. Themes include bamboo, birds, butterflies, lizards, insects and mushrooms. No previous painting experience is required.

This course will introduce you to a mixed media technique that is both satisfying and produces rewarding effects using watercolors and pastels, We will begin by placing a watercolor background on our surface and come back in with pastels. The background can be as detailed or abstract as the artist desires. The combination of techniques between watercolors and pastels results in a vibrant painting with depth and variety.

This class is divided into three two-week sessions. Each of the three painting mediums will be explored. This is a great class for everyone who wants to try out new media before making a commitment to buy materials. Each medium is very different in the way it is handled. The instructor will provide handouts that explain the major ways artists handle these media, how they are made, and what supports work best for them. Students may work from life, photos, or from their imaginations to create a small work of art.

Students will learn the basics of woodcarving and the use of tools. The first class is to explain the type of tools, safety equipment needed and where to purchase them. Students will learn the proper way to sharpen and strop knives/gouges, how to use the tools for making cuts, understand wood grains, make rough-outs, understand painting and staining wood, power carving and woodburning.  The instructor believes that hands-on learning is the best way to study the art of wood carving.
